Context:AI has been an integral part of the secret sauce of digital platforms for a while. Both Meta (then Facebook) and Alphabet (then Google) had AI research labs in the 2010s. These labs were led by some of the most important authorities in the field. Both companies have been offering AI based ad targeting models to marketers for the past decade. But they didn't call it "AI": the term was "too tech" back then. Google, for example, originally called it "Smart Bidding".Even Google's search algorithm has been using machine-learning (ML) since 2015. In 2016, Google's VP for Search retired, and replaced by someone from the ML department. Two of the most important recent social content inventions -stories and short form videos- also triggered by AI: Snapchat's "lenses" and TikTok's revolutionary algorithm were both powered by ML, and forced social media giants to change their game.In short, AI has been changing the digital scene for the past 10 years. We have all been feeling the impact but could not put their finger on it.Recently, all these waves have been coming together to change how we share, consume, monetize, and interpret content.Today, AI tech is becoming one big wave to change how we communicate.Tomorrow, those who understand this wave will ride it while others are drowning.
